New research suggests that people who stop using new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight much more quickly than those who stop traditional lifestyle plans.
Findings released in a major medical journal points out that while obese people can lose a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Users buying these treatments must be informed of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain implies a return to original mass in about one and a half years.
Comparing Therapies
The study, which reviewed dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
Researchers emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally experience a slower weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Understanding the Rapid Rebound
Experts propose the mechanism of the drugs accounts for the accelerated weight return.
The injections imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement means hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating far more likely."
A Lifelong Issue?
The NHS advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians say that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the therapy might need to be ongoing.
This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "highlight the chronic nature of obesity," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.
Patient Experiences
Individuals who have stopped the medication describe a powerful resurgence of hunger.
"It was like a switch that goes on and I was suddenly extremely hungry," described an individual.
The struggle is compounded if users have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Widespread Adoption
Recent estimates suggest that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.
- Use is more common among females compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, clinicians caution that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and long-term success likely depends on combined lifestyle management.
